for cyd
So what if I talk too much or too fast
I have a lot to say
It took 20 years to discover a voice of my own
only realizing now that my mouth
could move without puppet strings
and my tongue could strike
with the flash of lightning
my words and my thoughts melting
the bars of the cage
I once learned to breathe within.
Now every syllable I speak
is louder than the other
my song against the limitations
previously dictated for me
and I sing every note in chorus with
every woman who finally felt
the freedom of her own mind.
